Zoo project
Description
Located at the foot of the Tungurahua Volcano, the eighthectare (20 acre) San Martín Zoo is home to approximately 60 species of birds and mammals in addition to many more of reptiles, amphibians and fish; nevertheless, it is much more than just a living exhibit of Ecuador’s biodiversity. The Zoo is active in programs of conservation of both the flora and fauna native to the region, and frequently carries out environmental education campaigns with nearby communities.
Location
Two kilometers from the town of Baños, 180 kilometers from Quito (approximately 3.5 hours by bus).
Volunteers Activities
One of the primary objectives of Ecozoológico San Martin is to support research, to give volunteers and interns the opportunity to acquire experience in the management of the zoo’s animal collection while facilitating the fulfillment of any academic requirements they may have. During his or her stay at Ecozoológico San Martín, a volunteer will participate in various aspects related to the management of wildlife in captivity, such as: SANITATION & HYGIENE, ALIMENTATION, ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT, VETERINARY CARE, GUIDING OF VISITORS, SHARED ACTIVITIES.

8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday - Friday
Free Time
Baños and the nearby area are an important center for nature and adventure tourism. Bicycle and horse rental are available, as well as whitewater rafting, hot springs and innumerable waterfalls.
Volunteer Profilee
University study is not a prerequisite to acceptance into the program. However, prospective volunteers should have an interest in conservation and related human issues
Accomodation
The San Martín Zoo has its own lodging facilities with comfortable beds and hot showers. In addition, volunteers are provided with three meals a day. The zoo also has a small library and computers which the volunteer may use with prior approval.
